Access to safe menstrual hygiene is essential to a woman’s health, dignity, and ability to participate fully in daily life. Yet for millions of women and girls in India—especially in urban slums and rural communities—disposable sanitary products are either unavailable or unaffordable. As a result, many rely on leaves, old rags, or other unsafe alternatives during their menstrual cycles, leading to infections, missed school days, lost wages, and long-term health complications.

As we enter the Project Butterfly Center in Mumbai, the steady hum of sewing machines fills the room. Here, survivors of human trafficking are learning a skill that not only restores their dignity but also transforms the lives of other women.
Set Free Pads are comfortable, reusable sanitary pads designed by Sameena Kauser, one of our own team members, who understood firsthand the realities faced by women in vulnerable communities. Her design offers a practical, affordable, and sustainable solution where disposable pads are not an option.

As we entered the Project Butterfly Center, we could hear the whirring of the sewing machines. Our staff were showing the new trainees the way to stitch the Set Free Pads, reusable sanitary pads designed by our own Sameena Kauser.
