The Beginning of Project Butterfly
Love Without Reason’s fight against human trafficking began in February 2015, when our founders, Susan and Santhosh, walked through the brothel districts of Mumbai. What they witnessed there—women trapped, children exposed, and lives reduced to commodities—left an indelible mark on their hearts. The suffering was not distant or abstract; it was personal, immediate, and deeply unsettling.
Through years of working with children born with craniofacial anomalies, Susan and Santhosh had already seen how vulnerability, stigma, and poverty can place individuals at risk of exploitation. Standing in those brothel areas, they recognized a painful truth: the same vulnerability that leaves a child untreated can later leave a woman trafficked.
That moment marked the beginning of Love Without Reason’s anti-human-trafficking work.
Rethinking the Cycle
Many organizations fighting human trafficking focus on three essential steps: rescue, rehabilitation, and reintegration. While these efforts are vital, Susan and Santhosh observed a troubling reality—more than 80% of women who complete these programs are eventually pulled back into trafficking.
The reasons are complex but deeply human:
- There is often no internal healing before rescue
- No restored sense of identity or self-worth
- No clear reason—or why—to choose freedom over survival
Without inner transformation, freedom can feel unfamiliar, even unsafe.
Freedom Begins Within
Rather than focusing only on removing women from exploitation, Project Butterfly helps survivors rediscover their worth, dignity, and identity.
The program is designed to:
- Facilitate inner healing and emotional restoration
- Help women recognize their inherent value beyond survival
- Equip them with sustainable business and vocational skills
- Restore dignity through meaningful work and purpose
When a woman begins to believe she is worthy of more, freedom becomes something she desires—not something imposed.

By nurturing inner healing alongside practical skills, women are empowered not only to leave exploitation—but to stay free. They become contributors, leaders, mothers, and role models, rewriting their own stories and protecting the next generation from the same cycle.
Project Butterfly is not just about rescue.
